Angela Carter Close, Brixton, London
The site
Angela Carter Close is in the centre of Brixton and is located on a previously derelict and overgrown patch of land that was attracting anti-social and undesirable activity.
MHP's priorities were to radically change the use and look of the site, improve the community's sense of safety in the local area, and increase the supply of desperately needed family sized affordable homes - while maintaining a clear commitment to design quality and environmental principles.
The scheme was completed in February 2007 and is now home to nine 'Ecohomes Excellent' family homes, three flats and a new play park.
The scheme
The environmentally friendly scheme, consisting of nine family homes and three flats, has dramatically improved a neglected area of land close to the centre of Brixton.
MHP took the project lead, working with Anne Thorne Architects to deliver sustainability to the inner city, while remaining sympathetic to the neighbouring conservation area's Victorian villas.
The deal
Partnership with the local authority, Lambeth Council, was a critical factor.
A new play park and green amenity were created for the benefit of both existing and new residents on a section of the Council's land.
The Council also part funded solar thermal panels on the larger homes.
