A supported housing scheme made up of a pair of semi detached houses for eight people with enduring and complex mental health needs was orginally located on the site. The shared accommodation was unpopular with tenants and commissioners.
Granta Housing Society, working in partnership with Adult Social Care, Supporting People and Basildon District Council, demolished the original building to develop a new scheme of 14 self contained 1-bed flats.
The 14 unit scheme is built using traditional masonry construction, centred around the mature oak tree in the courtyard.
Staff at Granta Housing Society work with service users to ensure they gain the necessary skills for independent living and that community links are made to enhance education and occupation opportunities. The scheme offers a resettlement service when people move on to ensure consistency of support and tenancy sustainment in the community.
Granta Housing Society achieved planning permission for the scheme, which was partly funded by a grant of £280,000 from the Homes and Communities Agency and £250,000 from Essex County Council.
The site was owned by Granta Housing Society, who instructed the design, achieved the planning permission, managed the build and now provide care and support services to tenants.
